Switchgrass 'Northwind' Panicum virgatum
Click on my picture to purchase me for your garden Categories: Native Ornamental Grass It is useful as a hedge, perimeter planting, screen, border background, or even specimen in the sunny garden. Birds love the seeds within these plumes, and you will love the cutflowers for fresh or dried indoor arrangements | DescriptionDensely-packed, slender olive-green foliage topped with airy tassels that turn from green to silver and finally to gold. The foliage is a bit wider than that of most other Switchgrasses, giving it greater strength and preventing leaning or toppling. It reaches about 5 feet tall on plants that spread 2 to 3 feet wide, forming an impenetrable mass of rich, dark color. In early fall, when the foliage is topped by masses of feathery blooms that begin pale green, then turn silver in autumn and finally pale gold in winter. Cut it down to the ground in late winter if you desire, and the new spring foliage will emerge denser than ever before. Vigorous but never invasive, this is a fine ornamental grass even for small-space settings. This Switchgrass is very drought-tolerant once established, and offers one of the best sources of rigid vertical accents for the landscape. Untroubled by pests and diseases, it is a native plant to be treasured. Zones 4-9." |
