Click on my picture to purchase me for your garden Categories: Shrub | DescriptionVenus combines three species to produce a vigorous, attractive shrub with large, fragrant Magnolia-like blooms. This combination of the Oriental and the two North American species of Allspice brings out the best traits of all three: large, bright flowers that arise over a long season; superb vigor; rich fragrance; and great adaptability to varying garden conditions.Flowers on this plant are stunning. Thick-petalled and a full 3 1/2 inches across, they are creamy white with strokes of soft yellow and lavender. The petals unfold into a cup form, releasing a fragrance evoking strawberries, melons, and spices. The flowers begin in late spring or early summer and appear most heavily in the first few weeks, then continue sporadically all summer. Deciduous, reaching about 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. It makes a fine hedge, driveway planting, barrier, or back-of-the-border display, but its also showy enough to stand as a specimen. Give this shrub moist, well-drained, enriched soil. In the north, Venus prefers full sun; farther south, afternoon shade. Venus flowers on new wood, so prune it down to the ground in early spring. |
