What makes a great pond.
After all the digging, installing the equipment, placing all that heavy stone, and filing the pond with water. You may think you are done, but the work just begins unless you take a few steps to get the water balanced and growing. Yes! I mean growing!
Green Like Pea soup!
There may be a number of reasons why your pond is so green. You may have a pump or filter that is to small for the size of your pond. Full sun can create an environment for algae blooms, or it could be to shallow, especially around the edges and in areas that don't get much water circulation.
To remedy these, first check your pump and filter size for your pond. If it is in full sun, you need to increase their size to compensate for the increased algae blooms.
If your pond was recently filled you may have to wait a few weeks for it to become ecologically balanced.
If it's a brand new pond, I would recommend waiting at least 4-6 weeks for your pond to find it's balance.
Make sure you have balanced the pH and added
beneficial bacteria and liquid barley. These increases the function of your biological filter and help combats algae blooms.
Plants

Act as an additional filtration system.

Fish

Are great additions to ponds.

Bio Filter

A biological filter is where beneficial bacteria live.
Skimmer
Skimmer ( not shown) Collects surface debris.

What is a Skimmer ?
A skimmer is a tub-like device that may house a pump
Its main function is to collect all the surface debris into a net for easy disposal. By removing the debris it reduces the organics that may cause algae.

What is a Bio Filter ?
A biological filter is a place or area . Where beneficial bacteria live. This can be a device usually tub-like, lava rocks or other fish safe media. The purpose for a biological filter is to provide an oxygenated environment where beneficial bacteria can live and thrive. These bacteria breaking down and convert toxic ammonia from fish wastes into nitrites and other organic materials into harmless nitrates.
Plants and trees soften the surrounding area and give ponds a natural look. Don't forget to add plants inside the pond.
